উনিশ শতকের বহু বিতর্কিত অসাধারণ বাগ্মী আর অসামান্যা বিদুষী রমাবাইয়ের সংস্কৃত ভাষায় প্রশ্নাতীত দক্ষতায় মুগ্ধ হয়ে পিতৃতান্ত্রিক ব্রাহ্মণ সমাজ “পণ্ডি তা” ও “সরস্বতী” অভিধায় চিহ্ণিত করেছিলেন। সীমিত আয়ু নিয়ে জীবদ্দশায়-ই সমাজের দুটি লক্ষণ-রেখা অতিক্রম করেছিলেন তিনি।একদিকে অকুতোভয়ে পিতৃতান্ত্রিক হিন্দু- ব্রাহ্মণ সমাজের কঠোর সমালোচনা করেছেন , অন্যদিকে হিন্দু ধর্মশাস্ত্রের নিবিড় পাঠ করার অভিজ্ঞতায় সেই ধর্মের আভ্যন্তরীণ ছল-চাতুরি আবিষ্কার করে স্বধর্ম ত্যাগ করে খ্রিস্টধর্ম গ্রহণ করেছেন। তাঁর জীবনের মূল ভাবনায় লিপ্ত হয়ে আছে কখনো তার নিজস্ব ধর্ম -ভাবনা, অন্যদিকে একটি অচলায়তন সমাজের প্রতি প্রগাঢ় বিদ্রোহ, নারীর সমান অধিকারের জন্যনিরন্তর সংগ্রাম, দুঃখিনী বালবিধবাদের নতুন অর্থপূর্ণ স্বনির্ভর জীবন ফিরিয়ে দেবার অঙ্গীকার। ভারতে নারীবাদের প্রথম ঢেউ তোলার কাজে পথপ্রদর্শক ছিলেন বিস্মৃত এই মহিয়সী । তাঁর ব্যক্তিজীবন আর লেখালেখি হয়ে উঠেছে এক বিশেষ সময় ও সমাজের দর্পণ। রমাবাইকে নিয়ে বাঙলায় বই লেখা এই প্রথম।
