Singhal, which later became Sri Lanka, continues to disseminate Buddhism in both the Orient and the West. The country has a significant Buddhist history, stretching back to Emperor Ashoka sending his kids, Mahinda and Sanghamitta, to Singhal, where they developed Theravada Buddhism. Sanghamitta brought the Mahabodi Briksha, the most ancient tree here, which is being conserved. Numerous traditions have been handed down through generations since Buddha’s fossilized tooth landed in Sri Lanka and found a place in a shrine. সিংহল বা প্রাচীন লঙ্কা অর্থাৎ আজকের শ্রীলঙ্কা আজও প্রাচ্য ও পাশ্চাত্তে বৌদ্ধধর্মের প্রসারে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা রেখে চলেছে। এই দেশের বৌদ্ধধর্মের ইতিহাস সুপ্রাচীন। সম্রাট অশোকের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় তাঁর পুত্র মহিন্দ ও কন্যা সংঘমিত্তা সিংহলে থেরবাদী বৌদ্ধধর্মের সূচনা করেন। কালে কালে নিষ্ঠা, শ্রদ্ধা ও প্রেমে সেখানে বৌদ্ধধর্মের অত্যন্ত সুষ্ঠ প্রসার ঘটে। আজও পৃথিবীর সব থেকে প্রাচীন বৃক্ষ হিসেবে মহাবোধিবৃক্ষ সেখানে পূজা পেয়ে চলেছে। যা সংঘমিত্তা থেরী এখানে এনেছিলেন। এছাড়া বর্তমান শ্রীলঙ্কার ক্যান্ডিতে বুদ্ধের একটি দন্তধাতু অবস্থান করছে। তার ইতিহাসও অত্যন্ত চমকপ্রদ। সিংহলে বুদ্ধের জীবদ্দশায় বুদ্ধের নিজের আঁকা একটি চিত্র বুদ্ধ সিংহলে পাঠিয়েছিলেন।
